With assessment at the heart of personalized learning, we must ask ourselves if their are alternative approaches if it currently feels like ESL benchmarking is done for external accountabilities alone. How can we incorporate an understanding of the Alberta Education ESL Benchmark criteria into day-to-day practice so that effective personalization of learning for the ELL is possible? With such an approach, when ESL coding and language proficiency verification dates roll around, we simply provide a snapshot of where our learner is along the benchmark continuum based on evidence that exists within what we already do for all learners in our classrooms. Join as we exchange current methods and explore additional possibilities pertaining to the benchmarking of English language proficiency levels for the purpose of lifting learning.
