WinSport is a not-for-profit organization that operates Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. By embodying the Spirit of Sport, WinSport helps Calgarians become better than yesterday. Whether it’s through helping children discover skiing for the first time or assisting world class athletes with their dreams to excel at the Olympics, WinSport aims to support all facets of the community.

It all began in the 1960’s, on our city’s small hill, when members of community learned how to ski in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. With grit and determination, defining characteristics of Calgarians, sport leaders were able to win a bid to welcome the Winter Olympic Games to our own hill. The 1988 Winter Olympic games truly embodied the Spirit of Sport, with high levels of community engagement through massive volunteering efforts as well as inclusion and determination, especially considering the fantastic feats of the Jamaican bobsleigh team and Eddie the Eagle. Since the games, the WinSport campus has grown while the Spirit of Sport remains as strong as ever. Now, annually, more than 1, 000 000 skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes at WinSport, where this small mountain in the city, provides a unique setting and unparalleled experience. In addition, over 39,000 school children come to WinSport each year to learn and engage in experiential sport programs. WinSport delivers programming from the grassroots “Discover” level, through the “Develop” stage, and up to “Excel”. By catering to athletes as they progress along the entire developmental pathway, WinSport has truly become a comprehensive Centre of Excellence in sport.

By participating in the 2018 Calgary Teachers’ Convention, WinSport hopes to provide insight into sport programming design and implementation through interactive and informative sessions. This one-day workshop will provide teachers, with the opportunity to experience two of WinSport’s “Learn To” programs, including WinSport’s latest thrust in the area of athletic development and sport science. The goal of each session is to contribute to teacher professional development but sharing fun and engaging sport programming ideas and options that can be brought back into the school setting and used to further build curriculum. The day’s events will also include a presentation on the Spirit of Sport and the LTAD (Long Term Athlete Development) model, both of which are central elements of WinSport’s programming. By participating in the 2018 Calgary Teachers’ Convention WinSport aims to engage all teachers in a unique, experiential day-long workshop at a legacy sport centre of excellence.
